Fact Finders Mission - Making Informed Food Choices #FocusOntheFacts

Nutrition is very important for growing children. When it comes to food choices, we always try to buy what is right for our family. How often we find that the food tastes good but in terms of being healthy it does not carry much value, or when facing a dilemma what is the best choice to make, putting aside pretty packaging and emotional shopping. In similar situations nothing can beat the Nutrition Facts which reflect in numbers the information we need to know about the food we buy.


Recently we joined Fact Finder’s Mission Event at one of Etobicoke Metro. It was a part of the Nutrition Facts Education Campaign, an initiative from the Government of Canada, developed for families to educate them how to use the Nutrition Facts table and make more informed food choices. It may sound boring to check all those numbers on every food product you buy, but it turns out very interesting especially when you do it with kids.


At the beginning of the Event Teddy received Sherlock’s detective hat and a magnifying glass, so we were ready to explore the grocery store with a pragmatic attitude, only pure facts, please. Children had a good time at a coloring station designing their own bags and showing their creations. After shopping bags were ready, we joined the presentation about the Nutrition Facts and Serving Size. We were excited to meet the event host Kristina Matisic, journalist and co-founder of Anna & Kristina’s Grocery Bag, who shared helpful tips about using the Nutrition Facts table in everyday life.


Our mission was about to start, teams were formed and split in different categories. We had to compare food products using the Nutrition Facts table but based on same serving size. While Teddy learns a lot about healthy food often influencing our food purchases based on his knowledge, Nutrition Facts table was definitely something new to him. He realized that most products have that table and numbers listed there are very important.


What we learned from our mission – how properly use Serving Size and % Daily Value:

• Start with Serving Size. Nutrition Facts table information is based on this quantity of food 
• Use the % Daily Value to see if a Serving Size has a little or a lot of a nutrient. Use 5% Daily Value or less is a little, 8-9% is moderate and 15% or more of Daily Values is a lot! 
• Choose food that has more Nutrients you want ( or you need to take) like iron, Vitamin A, calcium and fibre and less sodium and saturated and trans fats. 

It is a great idea to compare two different packages in one category and with same serving size. For example, cheese packs, the healthier and better choice is the one having less or moderate amount of trans fats, 8% or less. Another example, when comparing two types of pasta, better choice in fiber between moderate (around 8%) and a lot (about 28%) is the one having 28% of Daily Value.

Disney Pixar Inside Out - See the Magic Happening in Everyone's Head #InsideOut

This week we were very excited to attend advance screening of new Disney Pixar movie Inside Out. This animation movie we were looking forward to see since first trailers showed up. This is one of the kids and family friendly movie you feel in love right away. We were lucky to meet Phyllis Smith (voice of Sadness) before the screening.

The story mostly takes place in the head of 11-old girl  where five emotions Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust work hard to navigate through day to day challenges. The life of Riley is mostly led by joy and lovely memories spent with her mom and dad, hockey and good friends. One day Riley’s family has to move to San Francisco because of dad’s new job. New environment, new city and new school bring lots of mixed emotions and it is not surprising that they should adjust to a new life too.


Accidentally, Joy and Sadness are lost in the memory aisles and need to get back to the headquarters, while Anger, Disgust and Fear left in charge. While everyone wants to keep Sadness in a circle and never let her go, in this journey we all realize that all emotions are important and valuable. When Joy and Sadness are trying to reach the headquarters, they meet characters like Riley’s childhood imaginary friend Bing Bong, some kind of elephant and cat creature, visit Imagination Land where all Riley’s imaginary creations got shape, color and sound. They also learn that with time memories fade and disappear.


The movie brilliantly reflects what is going on in everyone's head, giving all our emotions face, shape and unique touch. We were excited to watch how Train of Thought goes back and forward, and all the island our memories and emotions are built, that Teddy asked if we all have these huge islands like Family island, Hockey Island, Music Island, Art Island and other ones in one head.

On the way back Joy and Sadness have to be creative to overcome some obstacles and see that Train of Thought stops when Riley falls asleep and Dream Productions is busy shooting new scenes for night dreams. All emotions are important and their teamwork makes us feel, love, enjoy, suffer and be who we are.

Overall, lovely movie to enjoy for the whole family. Plus it comes in 3D, the way to see all spectacular scenes, cry, laugh and have a good time for sure. Inside Out hits theatres today, June 19.

Also enjoy a short film before Inside Out: Lava, a musical love story. The song is so catchy and easy to remember that Teddy sings it since Monday.

Each player picks a card for every move. The interesting feature is that you can shift the road back and forward to free your path or block your opponent, yes, no time to be nice, it is Rush Hour!


If with playing cards (32 of them) you need some luck, when it comes to a strategy, it is up to a player to find the smartest ways to get through blocking cars to the finish. As for blocking vehicles, there are cars, trucks and buses of different colors.

The game also includes a booklet with 10 game set-ups from easy to more difficult ones. Teddy loves playing Rush Hour® Shift 2-Player Strategy Game with us, if only he was so good in following all the rules, sometimes he creates his own and assumes it has to be that way. This two-player Rush Hour is much more interesting than one-player game, because it brings some interesting turns when you have to think for two people and predict your opponent’s next moves.

Overall, it is a great brain teasing game for kids and adults, quite challenging and involves you from the beginning to the end. It gives you ways to solve the problem but how you are going to do it, that’s the trick!
